When you think about traveling during the low season — with muddy trails and constant rain — it already feels exhausting just to imagine. Yet, strangely enough, there’s always a group of people who are drawn to it, ready to embrace the challenge and head out exploring. And that group includes us too.
We call this rainy-time journey the Green Season. There aren’t many provinces that come to mind during this time, but one that always does is Nan. And so, this became our adventure at the very end of the rainy season — unless the rains decide to linger longer than they should.
Here we are in Nan, chasing the lush greenery of nature: the vibrant rice fields, the refreshing air after the rain, and the mist that lingers across the skies.
Our destination: Huai Thon Village.
A small village tucked deep within the mountains of Nan, Huai Thon has preserved its peaceful charm and the essence of simple rural life. The winding road through dense forests, crossing rivers, and climbing up to high ridges is exactly what makes travelers fall in love — ourselves included. :)

Getting to Huai Thon is no easy task. Parts of the road turn into off-road tracks that require a vehicle ready to tackle the challenge — especially during the rainy season, when things get even tougher. But the reward is worth it: breathtaking scenery, with mist draped over the mountains as far as the eye can see.
Our journey to Huai Thon Village begins at Sapan Village, where the road up to Huai Thon starts.

The road to Huai Thon Village slowly transforms from paved asphalt into red dirt trails. Dust rises with every turn of the wheels as the car climbs and descends along the mountain ridges. Every kilometer brings the feeling that “we’re getting closer to nature itself.”

On both sides of the road, layers of green mountains stretch into the distance. At certain points, terraced rice fields appear, like a natural carpet laid across the hillsides. Looking up, a thin veil of mist drifts gently above the ridges — an atmosphere that feels both refreshing and exhilarating at the same time.

The atmosphere was so good I couldn’t resist rolling down the window, letting the breeze hit my face and refresh me along the way. Driving on, it wasn’t much farther until we reached the village. Luckily, even though it was the rainy season — with muddy, difficult roads — some of the steep sections had been nicely paved, making the journey a little easier.

Upon arriving at the village, we couldn’t miss the chance to stop for a commemorative photo at the bridge — with its sign proudly declaring that we had truly arrived at Huai Thon Village.

Huai Thon has no luxury hotels — only small wooden home stays where everyone gathers around, chatting together in the chilly air, warmed by a kind of comfort that money simply can’t buy.
We stopped to camp here for a night at Huai Thon Coffee Farm. Our tents were set up on the open grounds right in front of the homestay, offering an absolutely stunning view. The place also provides food, drinks, and bathroom facilities, making the stay both simple and convenient.

On our last day before driving back down, we couldn’t resist stopping to take photos around the village. Every corner here is breathtakingly beautiful.
This place is truly a healing spot for the soul. We recommend visiting during the late rainy season to early winter, when the roads aren’t too muddy and the atmosphere is just perfect. A 4WD vehicle is best for the journey, but if you don’t have one, local tour services are also available.
